More about the Public Libraries 50p

These special edition 50p coins were issued in 2000 to commemorate 150 years since the Public Libraries Act was passed as an act of parliament in 1850.

The Public Libraries Act first gave local boroughs the power to establish free public libraries. It was the first legal step towards the creation of universal access to information and literature, and it is seen as a milestone in the social education of the country.
