More about the 50p
The image of Britannia first appeared on British coinage in 1672 during the reign of Charles II and since then has always been present on at least one denomination. The decision to remove her from the 50p piece was met with hostility and objection by Daily Mail readers and dozens of MPs who launched a 'Save Britannia' campaign in 2008.
